Best Double Sleeping Bag – Expert Review

Updated: February 12, 2024
best-double-sleeping-bag-1

When looking for the best double sleeping bags for your camping needs, the TETON Sports Mammoth scores highest for its quality design and construction. Rated for 0 °F ( -17.7 °C), it is suitable for camping in colder weather, but it's not great for backpacking as it weighs nearly 16 lbs (7.25 kg).

If you’re able to extend your budget, consider the Sierra Designs Frontcountry Bed. This premium, two-person sleeping bag is super comfortable and is zipper free - which means less faffing at night.

The Sleepingo Double Sleeping Bag is great for backpacking. It weighs only 3 lbs (1.36 kgs).

While most double sleeping bags can be converted into a comforter or two single sleeping bags, I like the Alps Mountaineering Twin Peak Double Sleeping Bag. Strong and durable, with a very reasonable price tag, this is a useful piece of gear to have.

Best Double Sleeping Bag Buyer's Guide

What is a Double Sleeping Bag?

A double sleeping bag is a large sleeping bag designed to fit two adults comfortably inside. If you and your partner enjoy camping together, a 2-person sleeping bag can save you some packing space as you wouldn't need to pack two separate sleeping bags.

A double sleeping bag might not just be for a couple wanting a romantic getaway under the stars. It is also useful for parents with younger children, as a child might feel more secure and comfortable close to mum or dad.

The benefits of a double sleeping bag over two separate ones are more than just the cuddling factor; buying one double bag is generally cheaper than buying two individual ones of a similar quality, and there is some weight and space saving to be had.

Can any sleeping bags be zipped together to make a double sleeping bag?

As long as the zippers on two individual sleeping bags match in size and length, you can zip them together to form a double sleeping bag. Rectangular sleeping bags are the easiest to zip together, whereas mummy-style sleeping bags require both a right and a left side zipper design.

If you want a 2-person sleeping bag but already have two separate ones, you can try zip them together but don't force the zips if they don't match or you could damage them. A double sleeping bag is a great investment if you and your partner love camping as it is more affordable than buying two and are often designed to be able to unzip into two individual sleeping bags as well.

Size

Size is a difficult thing, especially if you and your sleep-partner are very different in size. Most manufacturers base their dimensions on two average-sized adults in both width and height. Consider if you or your partner are restless sleepers and how comfortable you will be in a snug-fit bag.

Materials

Shell Fabric

Nylon, polyester and taffeta are the most commonly used fabrics in summer sleeping bags. While they are not the most durable, they are breathable, lightweight, and easy to care for. A higher quality three-season sleeping bag might have a nylon or polyester ripstop shell. Ripstop is more rugged but not waterproof.

Some other industry names to look out for are DryClime, Microfiber, and Gossamer Micro – these are all strong, moisture-resistant fabrics. DryLoft is a water-resistant fabric that maintains its breathability ensuring that moisture is not trapped inside. This is ideal for a four-season sleeping bag and when wet weather is predicted.

Liner

Synthetic fabrics, like nylon, polyester and taffeta, are ideal for lining as they are breathable, soft and don’t get too hot. A more expensive bag might have cotton, silk or flannel, which are softer, quieter and more comfortable against the skin. A winter bag might have a fleece lining for extra warmth.

Inner / Filling

Consider the insulation inside your bag. Generally, the options are either synthetic or down. Synthetic polyfibre is cheaper, easy to care for and dries quickly. Down is usually from the soft feathers of ducks or geese. It is much warmer and more durable, so will generally be longer lasting but they do take a long time to dry.

If weight is a consideration, down is a better option. If you are concerned around ethical treatment of the animals, look out for a label stating that the feathers are ethically sourced.

Other Components

A good, snag-free zipper is always a plus.

Temperature Rating

One of the benefits of a double sleeping bag is body heat. Bear this in mind when considering the temperature rating of a sleeping bag. Rather select a bag suitable for a range of mild temperatures that you can use most of the year, and then purchase a cold weather specific one if required. Bags are usually rated as Summer, Three-Season or Winter.

Remember the rating indicates the lowest temperature at which the sleeping bag will keep you warm. This doesn’t take into account whether you’re sleeping pitched inside a small tent or out in the open, or what you are wearing. A good rule of thumb is to subtract 10 degrees from the lowest expected temperature.

Weight

The weight of the sleeping bag is particularly important if you are backpacking. If you are car camping it is not such a deal breaker.

Pack Size and Compressibility

A compact pack size is a plus when it comes to backpacking and car camping as it simply means more space. The ability to easily compress the bag after use and pack into a stuff sack is a matter of convenience.

Design

The design and shape of the bag you select is really a personal preference. While most double sleeping bags are the standard rectangular shape, there are a few mummy shaped one which taper towards the feet. Look for a bag with a hood that will help keep cold air out as it eliminates the gap around your shoulders.

Also look out for options like extra length if you prefer a bit more space or if you are particularly tall.
