What's a good weight for a backpacking sleeping bag?
When backpacking its important that all of your gear is as light as possible to make carrying everything easier. It is generally recommended that your sleeping bag weigh less than 2 lbs (0.9 kg).
Unfortunately, the most lightweight sleeping bags generally come at a higher price because they have down insulation as opposed to synthetic.
Down is lighter and compress easily, but are much more expensive. Hence why all the sleeping bags on this list utilize synthetic filling as they are under $100. Synthetic insulation is a more affordable and practical option for backpacking as down sleeping bags should not get wet or they lose all of their insulation properties.
How do I choose a good backpacking sleeping bag?
Style
Sleeping bags come in two styles - regular and mummy. The regular style sleeping bag has a rectangular shape, which give you room to move around. They are designed for warmer conditions and there also won’t be insulation covering your head. The tend to be fairly heavy. A mummy style sleeping bag is better suited to colder conditions. Materials
