Geigerrig Hydration Engine Hydration Pack Review

Geigerrig Hydration Engine Review

The Geigerrig Hydration Engine (now re-branded as the Aquamira Pressurised Hydration Reservoir stands out as our most innovative hydration bladder due to its unique pressurized system that gives it the edge above of the rest.

We love that it is multi-functional, relatively light, and fits into our backpacks and running packs.

We are however a little disappointed that it is missing measurements on the outside of the bladder to tell us how much liquid we are carrying or consuming whilst out on our hike.

Best described as a multi-functional, smart and fun hydration bladder to keep around camp, take out hiking, biking or running with you, the Geigerrig Hydration Engine is definitely one of our favourites.

Geigerrig Hydration Engine Hydration Pack

Manufacturer: Aquamira

Pros

  • Innovative, multipurpose pressurized drinking system
  • Dishwasher safe and very easy to clean
  • Slim profile that fits into most backpacks and running packs

Cons

  • No measurements on the outside of the  bag to keep track of our water use
  • When pressurized water does slosh around a little bit
  • Most expensive of the five

Conclusion

The Geigerrig Hydration Engine is not to be mistaken for a novel item that makes up for a lack of functionality by distracting us with advanced technology.

To the contrary, this one wowed us with impressive functionality and ability to be more than just a means of keeping us hydrated.

The pressurised system makes sure that water squirts easily into your mouth and the increased flow is useful for fulfilling various other cleaning functions around camp such as hosing down muddy shoes after a hike, washing hands, or using it as a hanging outdoor shower to rinse ourselves and have a quick freshen up after mountain biking.

Even though the Geigerrig Hydration Engine is priced a little higher than the other hydration bladders, we have no qualms about parting with the extra cash for this one as a lot of thought has been put into producing a quality product that ticks the boxes.

Its size has been carefully considered and it fits nicely into most backpacks and running packs. The pressurised system ensures a constant flow of water into your mouth and the fold top makes it easy to refill on the move.

In addition, cleaning has never been easier as the fold top can be turned inside out and scrubbed, and this particular hydration bladder is dishwasher safe too.

Finding the correct hydration pack for your needs and budget remains a tricky task and sifting through the troves of reviews can be time consuming and confusing. To make things easier, check out our expert review on the top 5 hydration bladders here.

Key Features

Size and Profile

The Geigerrig comes in a 2L and 3L capacity. We would recommend getting the bigger one so that you have the option to carry more water if need be.

The additional weight added by the extra litre is not great enough to have a huge impact on your ability to carry the bladder especially considering this is not known for being the lightest option in the first place. Profile wise the tall slim shape makes this a good fit for most backpacks that it was tested with.

Hydration Pack Opening Type

The Geigerrig features a fold top that can be opened up and easily refilled from a flowing stream or from a deep basin. Refilling from a shallow basin can present a slight problem if the bladder has to sit in the basin as this can cause it to fold over a little and you lose the ability to fill it up to full capacity.

Bite Valve Size

The Geigerrig Hydration Engine comes standard with a small bite valve which generally equates to difficult suction. However, this is not the case here as the pressurized system eliminates the problem of restricted water flow into the mouth and if anything, the small bite valve was a little more comfortable than the bigger ones, especially when we were out of breath in the field.

The mouthpiece on the Geigerrig features a turn valve closing mechanism which does not score as highly as the alternative switch lock closing mechanism that is easier to access whilst on the move exercising. We recommend swapping it out for the CamelBak Crux mouthpiece.

Ease of Cleaning

The large opening of the Geigerrig means that the reservoir can easily be turned inside out for cleaning. This feature allowed us to get into all the nooks and crannies of the hydration bladder and give it a good scrub with an ordinary brush.

Geigerrig claims that the pressurized flow also keeps the hose cleaner than a non-pressurized system by preventing any bacteria build up. One of our favourite things about this bladder is that it is dishwasher safe too.

Component Compatibility and Interchangeability

The hose, mouthpiece and reservoir are all relatively easy to detach from the bladder, and the hose and mouthpiece are compatible with the other brands featured in this review that use a quick release system on the hose.
